Study in Canada for Free

Every undergraduate international student wants to study in Canada for free. And while not every student can get that kind of scholarship, there are some opportunities to study in Canada for almost free. At some Canadian universities tuition is almost fully covered by scholarship, if not covered 100%. So where can you study in Canada for free, or almost free?

Before sharing which universities have the best scholarships, I need to explain that there are two main kinds of scholarships at Canadian universities for undergraduate students. The first kind and the one that is most readily available is the merit scholarship. Merit scholarships are based on your admission average, not on your final grade which you might receive after you get an offer. For example, if your admission offer was based on your predicted grades, then there will likely be no additional scholarship amounts after you receive your final grade. Usually, students are automatically considered for merit scholarships. There is no need for a scholarship application for these ones.

The second kind of scholarship is an application-based scholarship. While academic grades are important, many other criteria are looked at: extracurricular activities, demonstrated leadership skills, passion, interest and sometimes financial need is also included, depending on the university. International students who are active leaders, can see a problem, analyse it and put a solution into place are among those who might end up getting one of these scholarships. You can be active is sports, charity, community activities, education, science, the arts, etc. Application deadlines for these scholarships are usually early in the year and sooner than when you might get an offer. For example, the University of Alberta’s scholarship deadline is mid-January, their admission deadline is March 1st but you need to submit your admission application well before the scholarship deadline to be eligible for this scholarship. While this can be difficult to remember all the dates, don’t panic, that is why Go 2 Canada is here to help you.
