Canada’s St Francis Xavier University has Great Scholarships

Atlantic Canada has much to offer the international student and one of these offerings is one of the oldest universities in the region, St Francis Xavier. This university is ranked among Canada’s top 10 primarily undergraduate universities, has some of the cheapest tuition rates in the country and it likes to give scholarships to international students.

I say likes because they have around 20 different international student entrance awards to hand out every year. These scholarships can be broken down into 3 main categories:

Merit Scholarships

These scholarships are based on marks alone. There is no application necessary for these awards, you are automatically considered for the award based on the student’s admission average. Over $7 Million in merit-based scholarships alone is awarded yearly to national and international students combined. These scholarships can range from $500 to $10,000 CAD. Students need a minimum admission average of 85% on five grade 12 subjects used for admission. If the grade 12 marks are not yet available at the time of admission, then final grade 11 equivalent subject marks will be used in the interim until the final grade 12 grades can be provided.

Application Based Scholarships

The eligibility criteria for these international student scholarships is a combination of merit and leadership skills that are demonstrated through volunteerism and other extracurricular activities a student might engage in. Some of the scholarships include:

  • International Baccalaureate Scholarship worth $28,000 CAD and is open to all nationalities, that is Canadians and international students.

  • StFX International Scholarships worth $24,000 CAD spread over 4 years. This scholarship is available to only international students.

  • International Student Ambassador Scholarships worth $10,000 and is open to international students.

  • International Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships with the award being between $1000 to $5000 CAD. Open to only international students.

  • Schwartz National Scholars is their best award at $80,000 CAD and this award covers around 95% of an international student’s tuition. It is open to all first-year Business students including Canadian and international students.

  • Schwartz School of Business International Scholars at $32,000 is also a good scholarship to get. It is an entrance scholarship open to incoming international BBA students.

  • PGOV Scholarships – There are 4 different entrance scholarships at $7000 CAD each for students entering the Public Policy & Governance bachelor’s degree. These awards are open to both Canadian and international students. If you are into Political Science and related disciplines, this is a degree worth considering because of 1) the scholarships and 2) their Public Policy & Governance program is a flagship program thanks to one of Canada’s former Prime Ministers Brian Mulroney who is a graduate of St Francis Xavier.

Transfer Scholarships

St Francis is one of those universities that financially supports its incoming transfer students with several scholarships ranging from $1000 to $10,000 CAD.

The availability of scholarships is a good reason to consider this premier Canadian undergraduate university, but there are other reasons to consider St Francis Xavier University too. St Francis Xavier is a smaller university where small classrooms encourage lively discussions and where professors motivate you to succeed. No wonder it ranks #1 in Canada in teaching students to think critically, helping students gain work related experience and #1 where professors know you by name. The other great thing about St Francis Xavier University is its price. Tuition is around $21,000 CAD per year. You can’t beat the price!
